The northern Indian mountain state of Himachal Pradesh is home to varied hill cultures predominantly all Hindu. Each district in the state is different from the other in its language and dialect. For instance the people from the districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti practice both Hinduism and Buddhism, while in the other districts the population practice pure Hinduism. The topography also varies. Ranging from sub-tropical shrub in the lower foothills to coniferous forests in the middle Himalaya to Aeolian and high altitude desert regions in upper Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti the terrain is a geologist's delight. All our culture tours are done by Jeep and some of these places will involve a couple of hours walking to reach villages.
Ladakh, Zanskar, and Spiti in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh are full of ancient monasteries that offer a glimpse into the traditions of the local people. Villages in this region also offer you interesting insights into the inhabitant's lifestyle. While the short sowing and reaping season sees all the villagers busy in the fields the winters see them relax and keep their fireplaces warm. Festivals also make up an important part of the average inhabitants' schedule. Ancient monasteries perched high up on hillsides housing antiquated thankas (paintings) and scrolls besides a host of statues and wizened lamas make for an interesting time among these friendly folk.
